My dog has decided to shed. It doesn't seem like she did this last year at quite the same rapid pace as she is now. Yes, I was brushing her every day, but I don't remember being able to brush off a small dog every time. This year she has decided to shed all of her hair all at once. The other day Tobin was standing beside me when I opened the back door to my car and when he looked in, he went "is that ALL your dog's hair?" Today was even better. I took Herriot for a walk downtown and the Potters drove by and saw me. When I got home Kallie says "remember when I saw you at the church and Herriot's hair was all over the place?" Kids are.... Awesome.
Today at the clinic I got to go on an outcall. The land out here is so beautiful and remote; it always makes me think of Jordan because I'm sure this is exactly where he would love to be. We pulled a calf on the tallest Beefmaster cow you've ever seen. You know it's going to be a fun day when you walk up to the back end and her rectum is above eyeball level. Luckily this guy had really nice set-up so I was able to climb up on s fence behind her to attach chains.

Family Visits
Today I got to go to Quitman for lunch to see my great-aunt and uncle, as well as my cousin (the Yeagers). Stanley was kind enough to make the most wonderful lunch of steak, salad, and baked potato. We also had the most beautiful fruit tart! When I was little, I used to call my great-uncle Jay "The Silly Man." I'm not sure he's changed all that much!!!

A Saturday of Satisfying Grossness
I was under the impression more vets are this way, since I worked with one in highs school, but I am apparently mistaken- it's just me. I love abscesses.
Saturdays are half days at the clinic and there are no appointments. This means just about anything goes. We may just see a group of heifers for brucellosis vaccination because we are conveniently open on Saturday morning, or we might see something pretty weird. Today it was both.
First up was a kitty that had been acting pretty lethargic for a few days and had a fever. To be honest an abscess is not the first thing that would come to mind with that history but they seem to be pretty common in Sulphur Springs. So we scrubbed it up and I put a good sized hole in the bottom part and let it drained. Obviously this smelled awful but that's not the point. See, how many things in medicine can you fix just by poking a hole in something and washing out the hole? I feel like I'm practicing Middle Ages medicine, draining the bad humors out. But here's the thing- it WORKS.
Next up in the line of grossness was a horse. This horse was worth exactly $10, so of course our options are pretty limited. This guy had a huge bulge on his lip that the owner reported had been there for two months. He was lucky- we popped a hole in it and fluid came out so we knew we could do something about it for cheap (surgical removal of a mass us a good bit more expensive). So we did the same thing as with the cat but the funny thing is that instead of getting white smelly pus as you would expect with an abscess, we got a thick yellow tinted clear material. Strange right?
So that is all in fun veterinary news for the day. Tobin and Kallie took me to the candy store this afternoon. We got popcorn and various candy. I also got some stuff for Jordan (a bacon sucker, bacon jelly beans, and bacon cheddar popcorn). They had weird soda flavors as well so I tried Green Apple Jalapeño, which was pretty terrible. Not, actually, because of the jalapeño as you might expect though... The green apple flavoring was just really pretty gross.
Tomorrow the plan is to go to visit some family and then apply for some more jobs (fun fun). Let you know how that goes!

Shopping- check!
One of my goals when I got out to Houston was to get a new suit with Jordan's mom. My old suit didn't fit very well and I wanted something a little more fashionable. We went to Banana Republic and literally the first suit I tried on was the right one. It's grey and just fits perfectly. So of course I had to have some fabulous shoes to go with it, right?
Herriot in Houston
I think Herriot would be happy to just stay here. We are spending a couple days with Jordan's mom until I have to drive on to Sulphur Springs, and Herriot is in heaven. She loves the pool... She loves the grass... She loves sitting on the table and being a silly puppy... She is super happy here. Needless to say, so am I. Their house is absolutely gorgeous. This afternoon- shopping!

Westward Ho
Well we are finally on our way to Texas. I tried to get everything done but didn't realize how much I had left to do so now it is 11am and we are just now making the trek to Houston. Herriot is sleeping soundly in the back and somehow I have managed to pack all my things for two months, her things, Jordan, and Herriot in my tiny car to go to Texas.
